Côco is the name of a traditional Brazilian music style where a singer is accompanied by rhythms from a pandeiro. The idea to combine Côco with an electronic dance groove came from the initiator of Electro Côco the Brazilian vocalist Viviani Godoy. Together with the English DJ Graham B and Dutch producer and multi-instrumentalist Alain Eskinasi the idea was translated to a contemporary format which you can hear on the first album of the band “Côco do Mundo”. Electro Côco plays a blend of Brazilian styles driven by a strong electronic dance groove, without loosing the mellow Brazilian feeling and sensibility. An eclectic mix of influences from drum & bass and reggae but maintaining a distinctively Brazilian sound they call Electro Côco.

Today the band performs with the lead singer Jeannine La Rose. Born in Paramaribo (Surinam), educated in Salvador de Bahia and living in Amsterdam nowadays, miss La Rose is Electro Côco’s new face.
On stage Electro Côco soon proved to be a very dynamic live act, lead by keyboard player Alain Eskinasi. Not in the least because of the Antillian percussionist Roel Callister, the groove of acoustic bass player Mischa Kool and the funky guitar of Ulrich de Jesus. The band is proud to play regularly with the special invited guest Praful on sax and flute.

The band started in October 2003 on small stages in Holland’s capital city. Within a few months Electro Côco was the talk of the town. They got ‘last minute’ invited to replace a band during a big festival in the night of the 31st of December in the North of Holland where they played in front of an audience of 4000 people. After the release of the first cd, called ‘Côco do Mundo’, the reviews of both concerts and CD were extremely positive: “Superior record, meant for all dance floors and all seasons! (OOR) – Tailor made for the dance floor, but behind this club image is beating a real organic heart (Het Parool) – This band makes international music of an international level (JAZZ). Just to name a few.

Despite the short period of existing the band is already playing in the summer of 2004 on a lot of known festivals in Holland and Belgium like Amsterdam Roots, Festival Mundial Afterparty, North Sea Jazz Festival, Pole Pole, Antilliaanse Feesten and Lowlands. The fact that the band is getting invited for world music festivals as well as jazz & pop festivals and dance club nights makes it a true world music band! The band got noticed by the jury of the Essent Awards, a Dutch award for the most promising bands, who choose Electro Côco as one of the winners for 2004. They also are nominated for the Edison Award in the World Music category. The Edison award is the Dutch version of the American Grammy or the German Echo award.

Meanwhile the band is evolving itself in a rapid way. The Brazilian sound is definitely dominant but influences of reggae, drum and bass and R’n B are to be heard when the band performs live on stage. The fact that the band receives interest from such a wide spectrum of events including world music, jazz & pop festivals as well as dance clubs is a testament to the broad appeal of Electro Côco.
